Arvay Finlay is a small, informal, friendly and very busy firm with a strong commitment to excellence, and we rely on our students to play a big role in our continued success. The work students do at Arvay Finlay is often very demanding, but it is also exciting and we try to ensure that each student is given interesting and meaningful work. In particular, we try to ensure that students are integrally involved in each case on which they work, so they can see the importance of their contribution. We encourage an open and interactive environment in which students work directly with, and learn from, partners, associates, and support staff.
Each student's experience at Arvay Finlay will be different, as it depends upon the particular cases that the firm is engaged in during the student's term. In general, while our students spend considerable time researching the law and drafting memoranda, we also try to ensure that they obtain useful practical experience such as drafting pleadings, interacting directly with clients, and assisting senior lawyers in preparing for and attending at hearings and trials.
Arvay Finlay usually employs two students - one articling student and one coop or summer student. Each student has his or her own workstation, with the use of her or his own computer. Each computer has access to Quicklaw, Lexis-Nexis, the Canadian Abridgement, the Internet and e-mail.
